After an extended absence, The Roundup is back!

Find out why an Australian man is saying thanks to a thief, why liking Sharknado and other bad films might actually mean you’re smart, and we’ll take a look at the NBA before the season starts.

Normally, the idea of someone stealing from me is going to tick me off. But after hearing Tom Drury’s story, maybe I can keep a different perspective when it happens to me again. Drury, of Perth Austrailia, failed to lock his 1994 Mazda one night and his uncle let him know the next morning. Drury checked the vehicle only to find that his stereo had been stolen from it. He wasn’t too upset however, as the stereo apparently had trouble picking up radio stations and would no longer read discs. He’d tried to remove it before but didn’t have the special tool.

“To get it out, I needed a special tool I didn’t have, so when I saw that the stereo was removed, I couldn’t help but laugh.”

The best part? Tom actually made money in the deal. $22.10 was left on the seat by his accidentally friendly thieves.

A study was conducted by film scholar Keyvan Sarkhosh of the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt, Germany. It was an online study that used college students and people on Facebook to respond with what their thoughts of a “trash film” were. Participants were asked what their definition was and to give an example 10 of trash films.

Sharknado was among the most often mentioned in the lists created. But that isn’t a negative thing, it turns out. The study also found that participants liked trash films as well as more artistic films.

“Items in the questionnaire were designed to uncover the relationship of trash films to other modes of filmmaking and distribution like blockbuster films, Hollywood mainstream or art-house cinema,” Sarkhosh said. “We also asked for the general art, media and film genre preferences of our participants.”

“We are dealing here with an audience with above-average education, which one could describe as ‘cultural omnivores,’” he explained. “Such viewers are interested in a broad spectrum of art and media across the traditional boundaries of high and popular culture.”

So marathons of Sharknado and other creature features might just mean you’d be bright enough to survive one of these movies.

Did you know that the Warriors blew a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals?NBA preseason has kicked off.

Did you know that Kevin Durant joined them in the offseason?NBA preseason has kicked off.

NBA preseason has kicked off. And there are a ton of fascinating storylines at play.

Will the Warriors gel in time to win 75 games and blow every one out of the water.. before losing to a Lebron lead team in the finals?

Will Lebron add to his MVP total, only to give people more reasons to argue that Michael Jordan is the GOAT.

Will the 76ers lose another 60 plus games and trade for sixteen more second round picks?

Here’s what I’m betting:

  • MVP: Paul George
  • ROY: Brandon Ingram
  • Champion: Warriors
